Most pets live much shorter lives than we do. Some live as little as 3 human years, with others living around 15 years. This excludes some of the longer lived pets such as birds and various reptiles, but they also need good care to live their full lifespan. Many pets such as cats and dogs are already entering their senior years by the time they are 7 years old. This means that they are far more likely to suffer diseases such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer as they reach their later years.
Due to improved nutrition and healthcare, pets today are more likely to live longer, which means they are far more likely to experience serious illnesses. This is one of the reasons that annual health checks are more important. Vets can screen for illness, diagnose and treat the pet before the diseases become life threatening. The annual health check is also a good time to ensure your pet is getting adequate nutrition. Speak to your vet about diet as well as any behaviour problems at the annual health check-up.

At the annual health check, your vet will screen dogs and cats as per the following:
- Dogs and Cats aged 1 to 6 years: Parasite check, annual booster vaccinations, dental check, heart check, blood test and chemistry panels and urinalysis.
- Dogs (7+ years): All of the above including a chest radiograph, osteoarthritis check and thyroid check.
- Cats (7+ years): As per adult cat and including renal disease screen, thyroid check, osteoarthritis and blood pressure checks.
