Surgery involving the eyes is referred to as ophthalmic surgery. Certain breeds of dogs are prone to eye issues and certification should be done before breeding these dogs. The vet uses an ophthalmoscope to examine the pet’s eyes. They may also need to use fluorescein, which is a special dye that is dropped in to the eye. It glows yellow/green under UV lights. This helps check for corneal damage. Many eye problems can be treated through medical but some may require surgery. These include:
- Cherry eye surgery (corrects protruding third eyelids)
- Ectropion surgery (corrects lower lids that face outwards)
- Entropion surgery (to prevent inward pointing lids/lashes from damaging the eye)
- Enucleation (removal) of the eye, usually only done due to cancer or severe glaucoma
- Removal of tumours on the eyelids
- Corneal ulceration repairs
Where there is need for specialised surgery such as cataract removal or eye ultrasounds we may need to refer you to a veterinary ophthalmologist to carry out the procedure.
